Review: "The performances are big and entertaining, and director Sidney Lumet, now in his eighties, directs with youthful force. Two siblings (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke), both in financial difficulties, decide to rob their parents' jewellery store in what they hope will be a victimless crime.
Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is an astonishingly assured film that in any other year would have been garlanded with major awards. It creates an extraordinary degree of tension, even though we know its two unsavoury anti-heroes - Hoffman in his usual imperious form, and Hawke, who has never been better - will screw up their master plan. A jewel of a script from debutant Kelly Masterson, and a terrific achievement for Lumet; one needs to go back to Dog Day Afternoon (1975) to find a film by this veteran that felt so accomplished."
